Lewis
Music Press
The Lewis Music Press
was founded in 2001 with the assistance of the
Western Isles Enterprise Board to create a
publishing company based in the Western Isles of
Scotland which is principally for the arrangements
and the original music of Andrew Duncan.
The mission of the Lewis Music Press is simple
- To publish music of the highest quality, in
terms of the music itself and also the quality of
the printed page.
To ensure this, at no stage is a photocopier
ever used. Every page is an original first
generation copy produced directly from the
computer hard disk then printed out on a Hewlett
Packard 5000 Laser Printer. Furthermore, the
in-house music software for the Lewis Music Press
is the latest version of the worlds leading music
notation programme - Finale, from Coda Music
Software.

Andrew Duncan
Andrew Duncan was born in Glasgow, Scotland in
1962. He is married to Avril who is a music
teacher on the Isle of Lewis and a French Horn
player. He has two children, Jack and Josephine.
After learning to play the Trombone at Primary
school, Andrew joined local brass bands playing
the Trombone, Euphonium and then Tuba. He then
went on to study music at Napier University in
Edinburgh and won a scholarship to study at the
Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. In
1984 he took up the post of Principal Tuba with
the Halle Orchestra in Manchester. Andrew was with
the Halle from 1984 until 2000. During this time
he travelled worldwide, and in 1998 gave the first
performance of John Golland's Tuba Concerto with
the Halle in the Bridgewater Hall. As well as
playing with most of the major British Orchestras
and with the famous brass ensemble London Brass,
Andrew was for many years a member of Halle Brass.
As a Tuba teacher Andrew has been Tuba Tutor
at:
- The Royal Northern College of Music
- The University of Salford
- Chethams School of Music
- Huddersfield University
In addition Andrew has given masterclasses and
recitals all over the UK, at the Royal Scottish
Academy of Music and Drama, the Birmingham School
of Music, with the National Youth Orchestra of
Great Britain and with the National Youth Brass
Band, as well as in Norway and Switzerland.
During his time with the Halle Andrew developed
his love of composing and arranging. The first
major development in his composition career was
when the Halle Orchestra performed his Concerto
for Trombone in 1994 with Andrew Berryman, the
orchestras Principal Trombone player as soloist.
Following this performance, Andrew was asked to do
several arrangements for the Halle mainly for the
Family concerts series. This continued at the rate
of four or five per year for the next six years.
In 1995 Andrew started an MA course in
composition at Salford University studying with
composer Peter Graham. It was during this time he
began to arrange for Brass Band. His success in
this field is impressive, particularly in the
Spennymore Brass in Concert competition where
Andrew has won the prize for the best new
arrangement or composition for five consecutive
years from 1996 -2000!
In July 2000 Andrew realised a personal
ambition to blend the sound of a professional
symphony orchestra with the sound of a top-flight
brass band. A Halle commission to write a work
depicting the history of Manchester resulted in
his biggest and most ambitious work to date. A
Tale of Two Empires, a twenty-six minute work for
large orchestra and brass band. The Halle
Orchestra was augmented with the forces of the
Todmorden Old Band and the performance took place
on July the 1st 2000 conducted by Owain Arwel
Hughes. The piece was enthusiastically received,
and received a further performance with the same
forces on June 31st 2001.
Demand for Andrew's services as an arranger and
composer steadily grew until in November 2000 he
left the Halle orchestra to concentrate on
composing, arranging and more recently, conducting
and adjudicating.
Bands who have commissioned arrangements and
compositions from him include:
- Fodens Courtoirs Band
- Leyland Band
- Whitburn Band
- Kirkintilloch Band
- Todmorden Old Band
- Sellers Engineering Band
- Grimethorpe Colliery RGB Band
In 2000/2001 Andrew was the Musical Director of
the Hepworth Band in Yorkshire. He has also
conducted the Teeside Brass Band on a number of
occasions, and as an adjudicator has worked all
over the UK.
Andrew is currently the Composer/Arranger in
residence with the Sellers International Band.
This continues a fruitful relationship with their
conductor Philip McCann which goes back to the mid
nineties.
Andrew is a member of The Musicians Union, The
British Music Writers Council and The Performing
Rights Society.

Howorth Suite for Tuha and Piano by Andrew Duncan.

Range: EEb-d-flat
I have been very happy to see in the past two
years a numher of fine pieces written for tuba
that are readily accessible to players of all
ability levels. Their technical demands are well
within the ability of most players. Musically, it
is of interest to players of all ability levels. I
am glad to say that Andrew Duncan Hawarth Suite is
a fine addition to this type of repertoire. The
piece is six minutes long and is very well laid
out. A trehle clef part for the Eh bass, as well a
bass clef version, were included in the review
copy. There are no had page turns and the copy is
superb. The piano part can he played hy a talented
amateur.
Haworth Suite is a four-movement work that
depicts scene in the Victorian village of Howarth.
The first movement, "Flying a Kite Over
Haworth Moor," is a gentle piece in 6/8 that
will require a solid legato. The music rises and
falls in counterpoint to the piano and requires a
very smooth style to make the title come to life.
The second movement, 'The Old Steam Railway,'' is
a pure joy. It is a wonderful tune in a folk-song
style that exploits the "cash-register."
While not technically demanding, it is really
wonderful music. The third movement, "A Lazy
Summers Day at Bronte Falls," is another
wonderful folk-song style piece. As with the first
movement, it will require a solid legato technique
and a good sense of shaping a phrase. The last
movement, "A Cat and Mouse Chase Down Main
Street! " is hy far the most technically
challenging movement. The tuba part runs pell-mell
over the range, depicting a very large cat chasing
a mouse. The technical demands consist of tonal
scales and arpeggios. The tempo is quick, quarter
to 168, and there are instances of meter change,
from 2/4 to either 3/8 or 5/8. As a side note,
both pedal e-flats are optional. With the
exception of the last movement, the tessitura of Howarth
Suite stays mainly in the cash register. This
makes the work playable hy any size tuba,
although, in my opinion, it is most playable on an
Eb tuba.
Howarth Suite is great. It will give everyone,
from the amateur player to the professional,
something to have fun with. It will make a
wonderful recital piece and is just plain fun to
play. I hope that Mr. Duncan continues to write
fine tuba music that is accessible to all. A
hearty thank you! Highly Recommended.
