A Modern Guide for Trombonists
and Other Musicians (3rd ed., 95 pps.) is
recommended for serious-minded students in ninth
grade and above, although it can be valuable for
younger students with a teacher's guidance. The
author most frequently uses it with late
high-school and college students, although
teachers and professionals have also found it
beneficial.
Although it is mostly text,
much of this book is meant to be useable in the
practice room. A Modern Guide... does contain a
few notated exercises for trombonists (that
other instrumentalists can adjust for
themselves), but it is not a method book.

Here is what musicians and educators are
saying about 'A Modern Guide for Trombonists and
Other Musicians':
"...'A Modern Guide for
Trombonists and Other Musicians' is a welcome
addition to the trombonist's library. Reading one
sentence, paragraph or chapter at a time, or taken
as a whole, it is a model of the holistic approach
toward learning which has proven to be so
successful for the best players we know. As a
book, 'A Modern Guide for Trombonists and Other
Musicians' is eminently useful..."

Trombonist, Boston Symphony Orchestra, Trombone
Instructor, New England Conservatory of Music and
Boston University. Excerpted from review written

"Rich Begel's 'A Modern Guide
for Trombonists and Other Musicians' is a very
practical book from which virtually every
trombonist can benefit. This outstanding book
covers very valuable and timely topics that
includes many facets of trombone performance and
teaching. I'll definitely recommend it to my
students and colleagues!"
--Dr. Steve Wolfinbarger,
Professor of Trombone, Western Michigan University
"A very well-thought out and
practical guide. Useful for every serious
trombonist, from beginners to professionals.
Particularly cogent is the section on practicing.
Highly recommended."
--Curtis Olson, Former
Professor of Trombone, Michigan State University
"A solid well-organized book,
and now required reading for all my students of
all ages. Worth reading several times over.
Contains an immensely valuable list of up-to-date
resources, web-sites, books, and organizations.
I'm giving a copy to my school library; every
music school library should have it."
--Tom Ervin, Professor of
Trombone, University of Arizona
“'A Modern Guide…' has been
enlightening to our students in so many ways. From
'How to Take a Lesson' to 'Expanding the Range',
Rich's book is not only a wonderful resource, but
also logical and very well organized in covering
the many aspects of brass playing AND being a good
musician. His book should be a requirement for all
brass musicians and music education students
embarking on a career in music!”
--Rob Tapper, Assistant
Professor of Trombone, Director of Jazz, Eastern
Washington University
