MATTESON-PHILLIPS
TUBAJAZZ CONSORT PERSONNEL
RICH
MATTESON (1929-1993), long considered by
colleagues and enthusiastic audiences as one of
the world's great jazz artists; Rich's chosen
instruments were the euphonium and tuba. lie came
from a musical family and his father was his high
school band director. Early on, Rich developed
such an interest in jazz that it became an
obsession. As he entered his senior year of high
school, his family moved from Ada, Minnesota to
Rock Island, Illinois. The twin-cities of Rock
Island, Moline. and Davenport were famous for
local jazz greats (Bix Biederbeck, Louis Bellson.
ct. al.) and had numerous clubs that booked
traveling bands and combos, providing opportunity
for local musicians to develop and perform. After
a brief tour of duty performing and arranging for
an Army band (1950-52), Rich earned a degree from
the University of Iowa majoring on tuba (there was
no degree offered for euphonium), all the while
working clubs on weekends. After graduating from
college, Rich taught high school music in Durant,
Iowa which, being only 19 miles from Rock Island,
allowed him to continue working clubs on weekends.
In 1957 Rich moved to Las Vegas and became a
'Nevada Musician" working clubs in Las Vegas.
Reno, and Lake Tahoe. He played bass trumpet and
valve trombone with trumpeter comedian Ish
Kabibble. In 1958 he joined she Bob Scobey band
and pioneered the use of tuba in a walking bass
style. He joined the Dukes of Dixieland in 1961
and embellished his growing reputation on their
celebrated recording with Louis Armstrong. Rich
treasured his work with musician comedian Pete
Barbuti. Rich gave l3arbuti much credit for his
own incredible sense of humor and flawless timing
when working an audience, at which he was
masterful. Over the years, Rich especially
cherished his appearances with Clark Terry. In
1968 Rich became a clinician for the Getzen
Company, moved to Dallas, and maintained a busy
travel schedule performing as clinician, soloist
with high school and college stage bands,
inspiring young musicians. He soon realized that
with music education he had found his real niche.
In 1973, after numerous guest appearances, Rich
was appointed to teach jazz improvisation at the
University of North Texas. He was able to continue
his soloist clinician activities. Rich and Harvey
Phillips conceived and cofounded the
Matteson-Phillips Tubajazz Consort (MPTJC) in
1975-76. Rich became a Yamaha clinician in 1976.
In 1985 while appearing with the River City Brass
Band, Jacksonville. Florida he met Ira Koger
(businessman, philanthropist, jazz enthusiast). In
1986 Rich was appointed to the University of North
Florida faculty as Distinguished Professor of
American Music (a position endowed by Ira Koger)
and promptly established a jazz department. In
1992 Rich retired from the University of North
Florida as Distinguished Professor Emeritus. Other
numerous honors include: The Spirit of Disney
Award. 1989; election to the Jazz Educators Hall
of Fame. 1990; Disney Mousecar Award, 1992;
